The agriculture ministry has issued a preliminary account of damage to Luxembourg’s farms following last month’s flooding.

Luxembourg’s agriculture ministry has received 153 applications for financial aid from farmers in the wake of the flooding that struck the grand duchy on 14–15 July, representing a total of €1,650,000 in damage.

The claims consisted of 17 damaged buildings, 44 cases of damaged agricultural equipment, 629 cases of damaged animal feed and 134 cases of damaged crops, the agriculture ministry on Friday. The lost crops included 723 hectares of prairie and pastureland, 77 hectares of maize, 16 hectares of grains, 2.5 hectares of vegetables and 2 hectares of vines.

The deadline for farmers submitted claims was 20 August. The agriculture ministry said it would release a further update on 13 September.

The agricultural sector represents less than 1% of the grand duchy’s , according to Statec, the national statistics bureau.

The Luxembourg Insurance and Reinsurance Association (ACA) damage to households due to last month’s flooding was €120m as of 21 July.
