Football and table tennis matches in Luxembourg have been suspended for the next few days due to the covid-19 related measures announced by the sports ministry.

The Luxembourg football federation (FLF) and the Luxembourg Table Tennis Federation (FLTT) were surprised that their sporting events were to be suspended immediately rather than from 1 November 2021, as for all other sports. The sporting associations were notified as late as Monday evening which left them with little time to react.

All league and friendly matches on 19, 20 and 21 October have been suspended.

The new provisions will see on-site self-diagnostic tests for athletes abolished with immediate effect. The FLF will likely resort to having certified rapid tests be issued by qualified professionals such as physiotherapists or nurses.

An updated calendar with the new dates for the games will be published by the FLF and the FLTT in the near future.

A parliamentary question was filed by CSV member of parliament Martine Hansen regarding the new covid law's effects on the FLF and the FLTT. She questioned whether the minister of sport Dan Kersch and the affected federations were involved in the exchange of information on the new provisions and whether the federations interpreted the new regulations correctly. The parliamentary question is awaiting a reaction but in the meantime Kersch did address the issue stating that he had spoken with the federations ahead of the decision.
