Luxembourg City’s population is comprised of 70,59% foreigners with residents from 167 nationalities living in the capital as of 31 December 2021, according to figures released by the commune.

While the capital’s population has increased from nearly 80,000 in 1985 to 128,514 to 2021, the proportion of foreigners has gone up as well. Non-Luxembourgers numbered only about 25,000 back then, while the tipping point arrived in 1997 when the number of locals and foreigners in the capital was equal. In fact, the number of Luxembourgers in the capital has been continuously decreasing since 1985, only picking up a slightly in the last four years. They now make up just 29.41% of Luxembourg City’s population.

Among the 167 different nationalities represented among residents in the city, the majority, 115,237, are from Europe. Residents from countries in Asia are the second most populous at 6,645, while residents from the African continent number 3,426.

And although most Luxembourg City arrivals in 2021 came from another country (15,603) rather than a Luxembourg commune (4,863), residents leaving the capital seem more willing to move house to another municipality within the grand duchy (8.881) than abroad (5,698).

In terms of age, the majority of Luxembourg’s City residents are between 28 and 35 years old.
