In time for Black Friday, the European commission on 26 November revealed a Eurostudy which found that in 2020, 65% of all EU adults between the ages of 16 and 74 had purchased goods online.

Luxembourg ranked 8th with 79% of people in that age bracket using the internet to shop. This represents a 7% increase compared to 2019.

People between the ages of 35 and 44 in Luxembourg used the internet the most, with 85% partaking, followed by 25–34-year-olds (83%), 16-24- and 45–54-year-olds (both 78%). Though the older age groups used the internet for shopping less, they still remained far above the EU average: overall, 74% of people between 55-64 in Luxembourg (vs 51% in the EU) and 54% of 65–74-year-olds (vs the 33% EU average) shopped online.

Pointing out events such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday as well as the accessibility to a plethora of products at any time as a cause for the increase, the study said that despite it, 19% of participants had never made an online purchase in their life.

All EU countries witnessed a surge in internet purchases, with the U.K. (90%), Denmark (89%) and the Netherlands (87%) having the most shoppers, and Bulgaria (31%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (28%) and Montenegro (23%) recording the smallest number of online customers.
