The former chairman of the CSV Frëndeskrees, Frank Engel, who was acquitted on Thursday, announced that he will lodge a complaint against the MPs who filed charges against him. He did not specify what form this would take and added that for the moment there was "no urgency".

"I am not prepared to let these people go by simply saying goodbye," said former CSV president Frank Engel,  after he in the case of the misuse of funds by the CSV Frëndeskrees association.

"We will find a way to react, whether it is through criminal or civil proceedings or another way,” he told Paperjam. But, for the moment, "there is no reason to declare this today" or "no urgency" to file a complaint, he said.

Engel said he was "extremely relieved" by the court's decision, which gave him comfort that the “Luxembourg justice does not lend itself to these political games". Six other defendants were acquitted alongside Engel, who condemned "the very miscalculated approach of the CSV deputies” who had brought alleged evidence of wrongdoing to the attention of the prosecutor.

"Taken for a ride"

He added: "I expect activists and delegates to ask the CSV leadership: what was the point of having us believe in such a party robbery?" He added that "thousands of CSV members have been taken for a ride".

As for the possibility of the prosecutor's office appealing, Frank Engel said he was "not worried" by this prospect. "They can do so if they want, but they have other things to do than to reopen this story for another year and a half of proceedings, when the facts have not changed.”
