Rail passengers will be able to benefit from free wifi in all of Luxembourg’s train stations starting in 2022.

Currently, over half of stations are already equipped with free wifi and by the end of the year it will be 95%.

This is according to Luxembourg mobility minister François Bausch (déi gréng), responding to a on the matter.

Free wifi will not, however, be installed on existing trains in Luxembourg. Instead it will be progressively rolled out in the new 2400/2450 series, expected to reach the country’s rail tracks from 2023 to 2025.

Bausch added that passengers can currently benefit from free wifi on 23 CFL buses.

A 2019 study from predicted that the number of European train passengers accessing onboard Wi-Fi would hit 5.3 billion by 2028, serving about 43% of all rail passengers. At the time the study was released, it estimated that about 12% of the total rail passenger market connected to onboard Wi-Fi.
