The structural work in Gasperich Park is almost complete and the first planting has been carried out. Set to be completed in spring of 2023, the park is beginning to take shape.

The end of the work is not yet in sight, as the City of Luxembourg plans to deliver the Public Park at Ban de Gasperich in the spring of 2023, but work has progressed well. Large construction machines have given way to smaller ones and paths and the different areas of the park are clearly visible now. Some trees have already been planted, even if they are still modest in size, being only two or three years old.

This new public park initiated by the City of Luxembourg will be the largest park in the capital. With a surface area of 16.6 hectares, it will provide a green setting and a recreational and leisure area for the inhabitants of the Gasperich district, the Cloche d'or, but also for other inhabitants and users of the city. The landscaping was designed by Carlo Mersch with the help of the engineering consultancy Schroeder&Associés. The structural work was carried out by Félix Giorgetti.

"The Gasperich district has seen a considerable increase in population," said Serge Wilmes, first alderman and responsible for parks in Luxembourg. "Between 2015 and 2021, the active population on the site grew by 63.4%, from 5,623 inhabitants to 9,190. It is important that the south of the city can also benefit from a green area with recreation and leisure zones, thus complementing the city's other parks. Moreover, if you take the tram in the near future, you will be able to go from Gasperich Park to the Kirchberg parks via the parks in the city centre,” says the alderman, who is already looking forward to a family walk in the various parks.

A park with recreational areas

In addition to the green areas, Gasperich Park will also have a playground for children with a climbing theme, an area for outdoor fitness, a petanque court and a beach volleyball court. At the entrance to the park there will also be a new brewery, the architectural design of which has been entrusted to Diane Heirend. The analysis of the tenders submitted for the "structural work" part of this building is currently underway and the start of the work is scheduled for October 2022, with an estimated completion date of June 2024. The operator has not yet been selected.

The park also includes large lawns for events, a 7,000m2 pond and the renaturation of the 810m long Drosbach stream. In addition, there are paths on stilts and a large main loop for pedestrians and cyclists with a length of 1,350m.

Carpentry work began in the autumn of 2021 and various lawns are currently being seeded.

At the top of the park, at 32 Gluck Street, a new infrastructure is planned for the Park Service and the Gasperich Hondsclub. It is designed by the office of Manuel Schumacher. The structural work on these buildings is scheduled to begin at the end of 2023, after the completion of the sewer rehabilitation work planned upstream. The estimated duration of the work is 28 months.

Finally, it should be noted that the budget voted in 2017 for the development of the park was €16m. To this must be added €5.1m for the brewery and €10.7m for the park premises and the "Hondssportveräin” (’Dog sports club.’)
