During a year marked by high inflation and energy prices, the American Women’s Club of Luxembourg (AWCL) has seen the demand for its Gift for Kids programme continuously grow.

The club for the past 26 years has been collecting money to buy presents for children living in Luxembourg’s residential foyers. Every year, volunteers working on the Gifts for Kids programme coordinate with residential foyers in the grand duchy to make sure that children in difficult situations--who may otherwise not receive a present during the holiday season--have a gift just for them.

This year, the club has seen the demand for gifts rise: “Unfortunately, due to recent global events, demand for our program has increased,” says the club, which currently works with 84 foyers. “The number of children in Luxembourg who could benefit from the program continues to grow so we need to grow as well.”

More than 1,200 presents were requested for this festive season. The presents, purchased from Cactus at the Belle Etoile shopping center--a longtime partner of the event--are delivered to the children on St Nicholas and Christmas Day. “In order to do this, we must increase the funds we raise to meet the growing demand in Luxembourg,” the association says, as it calls for donations.
