Amid high temperatures and forecasts indicating a dry season ahead, Luxembourg’s ministry of environment, climate and sustainable development, in collaboration with the water management administration, is urging the public to be mindful of their water consumption.
The aim is to prevent wastage and ensure a steady supply of drinking water throughout the summer.
According to the ministry, despite a relatively rainy spring, the replenishment of groundwater levels during the winter months fell short by 30% compared to the previous period.
The excessively dry summer of 2022 left the soil parched, making it difficult for rainwater to reach the groundwater. As a result, the renewal process was delayed until January 2023 instead of November 2022 and was further disrupted by a sunny February.
Despite the occurrence of rainfall in March 2023, it proved to be untimely as the plants and natural surroundings had already awakened and absorbed the majority of the precipitation.
Considering that climate change will worsen this phenomenon in the future, it is crucial to adopt appropriate practices to conserve water resources.
The ministry provided the following guidelines:
- Refrain from using drinking water for lawns;
- Water plants and flowers in the early morning or after sunset, giving preference to rainwater;
- Utilise car wash stations that recycle water through closed-loop systems;
- Opt for public pools over private ones;
- Choose quick showers over baths;
- Operate the washing machine and dishwasher only when they are full.
Moreover, authorities request that citizens refrain from unauthorised extraction of surface water bodies.
