Do you enjoy watching how conductors lead their musicians? Dramatic or subtle, with or without a baton: each has their own approach. This January, several renowned maestri are coming to the Philharmonie. Come and discover their multifaceted conducting styles!

11.01. Jordi Savall and the music of slavery

His conducting style in 3 words: authentic, expressive, collaborative.

: With a programme navigating between the worlds of music and history, Jordi Savall will be exploring the infamous routes of slavery through «emotional chants of survival and resistance». He is joined by the two ensembles he founded, as well as performers from Africa, the Americas and the Caribbean. A tireless defender of human rights, the conductor thus reaffirms the universal scope of music.

15. & 16.01. Happy birthday, Sir Simon Rattle!

His style in 3 words: energetic, precise, flexible: The British conductor celebrates his 70th birthday at the Grand Auditorium! The two concerts are reuniting friends, as they feature the London Symphony Orchestra and soloists Barbara Hannigan, John Scofield and Krystian Zimerman. With a musical birthday present, a celebration of the centenary of Pierre Boulez’s birth, and a recent creation, an eclectic but epic programme awaits you!

19.01. Venezuelan fiesta with Gustavo Dudamel

His style in 3 words: vibrant, dynamic, inclusive. : Fiesta at the Philharmonie! Venezuelan music takes center stage in this concert by Gustavo Dudamel and his Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela. The joyful orchestra will play a piece for the cuatro, a typically Venezuelan instrument. With Tchaikovsky's «Fate» Symphony closing the concert, get ready for an explosive cocktail of classical and mambo!

23.01. A surprising Requiem with Hans-Christoph Rademann

His style in 3 words: meticulous, refined, historically informed. : A requiem mass for a concert hall? Discover Brahms' musical paradox with the Luxembourg Philharmonic and conductor Hans-Christoph Rademann. Featuring his own selection of texts instead of the traditional canon, written in German instead of Latin, marked by Protestantism rather than Catholicism, and offering consolation instead of grief, this piece is a true hymn to humanity!

29.01. Drumroll... Sir András Schiff!

His style in 3 words: subtle, elegant, profound. : Did you know that conductors don't always lead from their podiums at the front of the stage? In his day, Mozart conducted from his piano... and Sir András Schiff will be doing the same on 29.01.! With his ensemble Capella Andrea Barca, he will perform two piano concertos by the genius composer, as well as the «Drumroll» Symphony by Mozart's great friend Joseph Haydn.
