Plans to build a major hospital for the south have hit a major snag after the board of directors terminated the contract with developers for reasons that were “in the public interest”

According to a government  by the board of directors of the Emile Mayrisch Hospital (CHEM) notified project management consortium Health Team Europe (HTE), of their intention to end the contract back on 2 July, 2021.

The press release did not outline what led to the cancellation, saying only: “The collaboration between the two parties was difficult throughout the contract and despite several attempts to restart the project on a good basis, a successful continuation of the project could finally be ruled out. The decision to terminate the contract was inevitable in the public interest.”

RTL reports that the contract for the 590-bed hospital, which is already behind schedule and incorporates a military hospital, was cancelled for three reasons: the submitted timeline is not realistic, contradictions in the figures for construction costs and insufficient supervision on the part of HTE.

HTE is a consortium of several actors working on the hospital project, including Austrian architects Albert Wimmer ZT. Health minister Paulette Lenert (LSAP) wrote in Friday’s statement that the decision by the CHEM board of directors was taken in consultation with the health ministry.

She wrote: “We are working hand in hand with the CHEM management to ensure that the Südspidol construction project can be resumed quickly and on the right footing, so as to guarantee that it can be completed within a short period of time.”

The hospital was initially scheduled to be ready for 2022, but that date has been shifted to 2024 and then to 2026, according to the Wort. Given the current set back, the date has since been revised to 2030-2031.
