Luxembourg’s parliament will soon vote on a bill that will amend the biometric data stored in identity cards.

Currently, the cards carry the holder’s photo and signature. If a current bill is passed this week, starting next month, two fingerprints will be added in accordance with European regulation. The bill will also ensure that the card-holder’s usual place of residence is removed from the card’s electronic chip.

According to minister delegate for digitalisation Marc Hansen (DP), a quarter of identity cards are issued following a move and change of address. By removing the address from the electronic data stored inside the card, there will be no need to reissue new cards.
