Luxembourg’s parliament will soon vote on a bill that will amend the biometric data stored in identity cards.

Currently, the cards carry the holder’s photo and signature. If a current bill is passed this week, starting next month, two fingerprints will be added in accordance with European regulation. The bill will also ensure that the card-holder’s usual place of residence is removed from the card’s electronic chip.

According to minister delegate for digitalisation Marc Hansen (DP), a quarter of identity cards are issued following a move and change of address. By removing the address from the electronic data stored inside the card, there will be no need to reissue new cards.

The bill will be put to vote in parliament this week.
