On 1 July, just in time for the summer holidays, Luxembourg’s natural history museum MNHN launches its exhibition Shizen--Japan’s nature through its 72 seasons. Eleven workshops, lectures and culinary experiences accompany the event throughout the summer. 

The Shizen exhibition will run from 1 July to 28 August. Delano the curator of the event, Robert Weis.

Japanese nature through photography

Naturalist and photographer Jean-Marie Mangen will take you along on a trip through Japanese landscapes with his collection of works. The event is free.

Calligraphy workshop

Artist Rie Takeda will fly in from the archipelago to initiate participants to shodō, the Japanese art of calligraphy that finds its roots in zen Buddhism.

Origami for adults

Cultural representative of the Japanese embassy of Luxembourg Kanemitsu Tanaka will introduce you to the popular art of origami.

Learn about the 72 microseasons of Japan

Expert scholar Mark Hovane--who shared his knowledge with the MNHN team in the preparation of the exhibition project--will hold a Zoom talk to discuss the concept of Japanese microseasons.

Meet a Buddhist nun 

Kankyo Tannier will meet with 12 people to discuss the passage of seasons through zen buddhism.

Explore Japanese gastronomy

After a guided tour of the exhibition, participants for €25 will be able to try out Japanese dishes. The tasting will be accompanied by explanations by Hajime Miyamae, the owner of restaurant Kamakura.

The art of bonsai

The Bonsai Club Differdange will hold a demonstration around the gardening craft of bonsai. For €5, visitors will be able to participate in the event.

Ikebana workshop

Ikebana is a traditional craft in Japan. The art of flower arrangements has roots that go back as far the 8th century. Astrid Maton, a master of Ikebana, will hold a workshop for the cost of €5 per person.

Mizu Teahouse pop-up

The temporary shop in the nature museum’s garden will offer high quality Japanese tea served in a traditional manner from 12 pm to 6 pm.

The Japanese Way of Tea

With 35 years of experience under his belt, Bruce Hamana will present the seasonality in the Japanese way of tea during a Zoom talk.

Learn about contemplative photography 

Ten lucky participants will be able to learn about Miksang--the art of contemplative photography--at the end of August, alongside Kyoto-based artist John Einarsen. The group will explore the surroundings of the natur musée in search of images to capture. To participate, visitors have to register, bring a digital camera, a laptop and a thumb drive.
