Did you know it was Charles Baudelaire who inspired the composer Henri Dutilleux to write Tout un monde lointain, a hallmark of the contemporary cello repertoire? From spleen to dark idylls, from pain to the fleeting hope of happiness, the essence of the French poet’s sulphurous collection Les Fleurs du mal comes to life wordlessly every time the piece is performed – in this instance under the bow of Jean-Guihen Queyras, supported by the full Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg.
The audience will then continue to feed their emotional wanderlust by diving into a timeless collection of tales, the Arabian Nights. In his symphonic suite Scheherazade, the Russian romantic Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov not only sets the legendary storyteller of the same name to music, but also the beauty of the Arabic language.
This folkloric and literary impetus will be matched by the popular rhythms of the Concert Romanêsqu by György Ligeti, the famous Hungarian composer whose 100th birthday we celebrate this year.
