Throughout the summer, Delano is interviewing people from Luxembourg political and public life about their first job and lessons learned. This week, environment, climate and sustainable development minister Joëlle Welfring (déi Gréng) shares her experience.

Only weeks before being nominated as a minister at the end of April, Welfring was appointed director of the environment administration as the successor to Robert Schmit. She had served as deputy director since August 2014.

What was your first job and how long did you work there?

My first job was a summer holiday job with a nature conservation consultancy.

What did you learn that helped your career along the way?

I learned to get involved in an area of work that fascinated me--that of the natural environment and the impact that humans have on it. In addition, since that experience, the importance of teamwork has become very important to me.

What did you spend your first salary on?

With this money I first invited my parents to lunch. They allowed me to pursue my ambitions and always supported me in my achievements.

Why did you quit your job?

It was a holiday job that was only temporary.

As far as my motivation for taking up the post of Minister for the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development is concerned, I have always been passionate about environmental protection, and the opening up of new perspectives and challenges motivates me.

My goal is to advance the protection of our environment and resources in collaboration with stakeholders in Luxembourg and internationally.
