Delano has been asking readers to share “My home renovation”, a home improvement project that could inspire others. In today’s instalment: Nancy Wendt Garza and her family modernised their “charming big house” to make it more functional.

Project overview

Name: Nancy Wendt Garza.

Occupation: Business owner.

Location: Mamer/Strassen.

When did you start your renovation project and how long did it take? 2018; it took 3 years.

Was it a new property that you bought or did you renovate an existing home? It was an existing home that we renovated.

Why did you start this project and what did you want to accomplish with the renovation? We started this project to make this atypical historical place our home for our future family. It was such a charming big house, however, it needed some changes to make it more functional, give it its full potential.

We wanted to achieve comfort while keeping the essence of this historical building, keeping its old features and style, while updating some facilities. We managed also to protect the property as national historical monument with the ----and got good advice and financial support from them.

Briefly describe the work that you undertook: We started with the basics, such as new heating systems, water filters, electricity, insulation, roof. Then also renovated the bathrooms, created a separate toilet, changed the kitchen, painted the facade, and entertained the garden.

Budget? +/-€500,000.

Now that work has been completed, what are you most pleased about? The quality of life in the house has increased, the garden can be used to its full potential and the place looks overall much more beautiful. I am pleased that the house still keeps its personality and historical features, and we didn’t have to compromise comfort over authenticity.

Looking back at the project, what would you do differently now? I would probably have started sooner and [gone] faster [with] the renovations. Living in the property while renovating can be quite stressful, as there is dust everywhere. If I would have had the financial capacity, I would have lived somewhere else while renovating it.
