Luxembourg co-production Lemon and Poppy Seed Cake by Benito Zambrano, supported by the national film fund, will start screening in Luxembourg theatres from 1 June. It tells the story of two sisters making up for lost time under peculiar circumstances.

The film is based on Spanish author Cristina Campos’ novel, which already sold over 300,000 copies worldwide and is the first Spanish novel chosen to be made into a film from the “Books at Berlinale” selection, where it featured back in 2016.

Award-winning director Benito Zambrano has said that he “felt a strong connection with the story and its characters” from the very first read.

After 14 years of being separated, a mysterious woman’s properties entrusted to the two sisters, Marina (played by Elia Galera) and Anna (played by Eva Martín), lead them to a Pandora's box of secrets.

With one stuck in an unhappy marriage and another whose job as an NGO doctor leads her to making some tough choices, the two women who yearn for a happy ending go through major ups and downs in life within a very short period.

Spanish actress Elia Galera, who used to be a lawyer, told Delano that her passion for acting and her personal dedication to the craft are key attributes in her personal life that she shares with her character Marina.

“It’s the first time that my character is not supporting a masculine role. All the main roles are feminine roles… I admired Marina. She has a fighting spirit and she’s very independent,” said Galera.

The film also features local actor Tommy Schlesser, who plays the role of Mathias, a Luxembourg doctor and partner of Marina.

A first film premiere took place at Cine Utopia in Luxembourg on 13 March in the context of the Luxembourg City Film Festival with members of the cast and crew in attendance. Cine Utopia will host a film preview on the eve of the cinema release in Luxembourg. The film includes English and French subtitles.
