German retailer Lidl is continuing to strengthen its presence in Luxembourg with the opening of a new shop in Mersch on 26 February. “We are delighted to welcome our customers to a more spacious and modern space. This move allows us to improve the customer experience while respecting our commitments in terms of sustainable development,” said Lidl Luxembourg spokesperson Julien Wathieu before the inauguration.
The site has a sales area of 1,700m², compared with 902m² previously, and a car park that has been increased from 81 to 127 spaces. This extension is accompanied by an expanded range, with the number of products on offer rising from 1,900 to 2,450, including around 100 Luxembourg products and a wider range of fresh produce, the retailer said in a press release.
Modernisation and ecological transition
As part of its modernisation drive, the chain has also equipped its shop with eight automatic checkouts, joining four other sites in the country .
As far as the environment is concerned, the chain says it is pursuing its “policy of social responsibility.” The supermarket has incorporated several features designed to reduce its energy footprint, including LED lighting, low-energy refrigeration systems, insulation that complies with Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) standards, and a heat and rainwater recovery system.
Lidl has also installed 1,000m² of solar panels on the store’s roof and set up 17 charging points for electric vehicles in the car park.
Strong ambitions for growth
Seven new employees and several students have been recruited to support this opening, according to Lidl. With 13 outlets and 428 employees in Luxembourg, Lidl is continuing to expand. Several openings and renovations are planned, notably in Luxembourg City.
Among the other major projects underway, the Ingeldorf shop is scheduled to move to a new location in Diekirch by the end of 2025. “The new supermarket will have a sales area extended to almost 1,700m² (+1,100m² compared with the old site) and a car park enlarged to 137 spaces. This reopening will also be accompanied by the creation of new jobs, with five new employees, as well as students joining the team at the future Lidl site in Diekirch,” concludes the press release.
