The Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) and venture capital firm Expon Capital have signed a collaboration agreement to work towards establishing an e-health ecosystem, the LIH announced on 12 July.

The new agreement aims to establish a framework that would allow the identification, development and implementation of different projects and activities, said a press release published by the LIH, a public biomedical research organisation. Examples include setting up juries for competitions, spin-offs and startups, or assistance for science commercialisation activities.

“We are delighted to have entered into this agreement with a reputable venture capitalist with a profound knowledge of the national research and technology landscape,” said , CEO of the LIH. “This will ensure that our scientific findings are marketable and can be translated into tangible healthcare solutions, easily accessible by clinicians and patients.”

The LIH will, in turn, provide scientific support to Expon Capital and help develop partnerships between digital health companies and the financial and investor community.

“We are looking forward to setting the basis for a solid and long-lasting strategic cooperation between the complementary worlds of research and finance here in the grand duchy, which will contribute to further attracting innovative and disruptive e-health companies, ultimately unlocking the potential of digital health and translational research and improving healthcare and patient outcomes,” said , managing partner of Expon Capital.

The LIH, which had more than 450 employees as of 31 December 2022, conducts research on topics including cancer, immunological disorders, digital health and precision health. It was formed in 2015 following the merger of the Centre de Recherche Public de la Santé research institute and the Integrated BioBank of Luxembourg.

Launched in 2015, Expon Capital is a Luxembourg-based venture capital firm that manages the Digital Tech Fund, a seed funding investment vehicle that targets sectors such as cybersecurity, digital health, big data, fintech, the internet of things or new space.
