The Luxembourg socialist workers’ party will be led by co-presidents Francine Closener and Dan Biancalana, following a national congress on 5 March.

Former economy minister Closener--who had also worked as a journalist at RTL--was elected after gathering a 92% approval rate, while Biancalana, trained criminologist and mayor of Dudelange, received 96% of votes.

The duo at the end of January had submitted their joint candidacy to lead the party on a permanent basis,  was also set up by Déi Gréng and the CSV. Biancalana had been of the LSAP when party leader Yves Cruchten replaced Georges Engel in parliament after Engel’s appointment as labour and sports minister on 3 January.

The LSAP is the third largest party in parliament and since 2018 is part of the majority coalition in government alongside the DP and Déi Gréng. 

Tina Koch has been elected vice-president of the group, while treasurer Chrisitine Schweich and general secretary Tom Jungen retained their positions.

published on Saturday, the new LSAP co-president Biancalana said: “I am delighted with the tremendous support of delegates for the new LSAP leadership team, which is younger and more diverse than ever.” Closener announced that housing, labour, health, climate and education would be at the heart of the party’s priorities in the future.

The new executive committee is composed of five men and five women.
