The airport operating company reported a profit of €17.8m for 2022, double the previous year’s figure. Next year, the Airport City project should finally come to fruition.

No one will deny that a wind of recovery blew over travel in 2022, the first year free of the health constraints linked to the covid-19 pandemic. This is reflected in Lux-Airport’s balance sheet, which shows a 60% increase in turnover to €91.4m and a profit of €17.8m, double the figure for 12 months.

“This result is obviously satisfactory, especially after two financial years marked by the pandemic,” commented Lux-Airport CEO Alexander Flassak. “We remain cautious for the future, which will be marked by investments such as our runway and the Airport City project.”

Launched in 2021, the renovation of the airport’s only runway is scheduled to last two years, with a budget of €150m. As for Airport City, this other project includes the opening of the next to the airport, as well as a .

Although cranes and other construction equipment are currently busy in this anthill, the airport manager expects the new infrastructure to be operational for the first time next year. Passengers will also be able to reach the terminal by tram, as this new section is due to .

Twice as many passengers, 60% more revenue

Last year, Luxembourg airport welcomed 4.06m passengers, twice as many as in 2021. This has had an impact on the operating company’s financial income, as aircraft landing and take-off fees rose by 42% to €25.4m.

The second largest source of revenue was passenger charges, which more than doubled to almost €20m. In third place, car parks brought in €17.3m, 77% more than in 2021.

Despite the fact that can sometimes be a problem for passengers, Lux-Airport insists on the stability of its car park charges: “Car park prices have not been increased for several years and will not be for the summer,” assures the director.

At the time of the interview on Wednesday 14 June, the Economy M car park was full, while queues of passengers were visible in the terminal. There’s definitely an air of holiday at Findel.
