A 38% decrease in gas consumption in June, a 34% reduction in July and now a 33.4% drop in August: Luxembourg continues to reduce its consumption of natural gas, says the energy ministry. Photo: Kwon Junho/Unsplash

Luxembourg reduced its natural gas consumption by around 33.4% in August 2023 when compared to the 2017-2022 reference period, said the country’s energy ministry.

After a 38% decrease in June 2023 and a , the grand duchy is continuing to reduce its gas use.

Luxembourg in August 2023 consumed 252 Gwh of natural gas. This is a 33.4% reduction when compared to the 2017-2022 reference period, when the country consumed on average 379 Gwh during the month of August. The drop in consumption is well below the European Union’s goal of reducing natural gas use by 15%, noted Luxembourg’s energy ministry in a published on 4 September.

The EU’s voluntary reduction target of 15% was set up after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began early last year. It aims to help member states prepare for the winter months and to ensure a reliable energy supply.
