Bounce, a company that offers luggage storage in cities around the globe, has compiled data on 48 world capitals and used it to form a list of the “best capital cities to visit on holiday”. The results were published on 22 September.

Luxembourg City ranks 26th overall on the list, but shoots to first place when it comes to the affordability of public transport.

This is no surprise, given that Luxembourg is the only city in the world where public transport is entirely free.

The luggage storer asserts that the top five capitals for holidaymakers are Valletta (Malta), Abu Dhabi (UAE), New Delhi (India), Manama (Bahrain) and Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). Eight criteria went into these rankings: average hotel costs (where lower is better); public transport prices; average temperature (where hotter is better); average annual rainfall (where drier is better); number of “attractions” per square kilometre; number of restaurants per square kilometre; number of Instagram hashtags (where more is better); and crime level.

According to Bounce, Luxembourg City only has a meagre 332,000 hashtags on Instagram. Only Andorra, Bridgetown and Valletta have fewer. London, meanwhile, is exploding with Instagram hashtags: holidaymakers to the UK’s capital will have no fewer than 151 million at their disposal.

Despite this accomplishment, London ranks just 39th overall, hurt by a high crime score (62.79 out of 100) and high hotel prices ($198.88 on average for one night).

Luxembourg’s crime ranking comes in at 25.42, lower than average but not as low as Abu Dhabi’s 6.88, while a night in the grand duchy’s capital costs $126.12 on average, nearly three times higher than Bounce’s top-ranked city for hotels, Ankara ($45.74).
