Luxembourg City wants to convince foreign residents to register to vote. It will send a letter to the 75,000 inhabitants concerned and is preparing an exceptional opening of its Bierger Center for voter registration.

With 7.6% of non-Luxembourg voters registered at the end of January, Luxembourg City is below the .

“There is room for improvement,” admitted (DP), mayor of the capital and likely , on Wednesday 22 February, especially since the capital is the most cosmopolitan city in Luxembourg.  Nearly 71% of residents are foreigners.

This is a reservoir of potential candidates that cannot be neglected: just over 81,000 non-Luxembourg residents could register on the lists, which already include 32,138 Luxembourg voters.

But to date, only 6,172 have taken the plunge. “We are currently below the figures for 2017,” the mayor emphasised. At the time, the conditions for registering on the electoral roll were more restrictive--five years of residence in the grand duchy were required. .

In the meantime, some foreign residents have acquired dual nationality, allowing them to be registered on the lists. But “there are still 74,861 people who can register,” said Polfer.

On-site or online registration

The mayor has therefore decided to send a letter to these residents to inform them that they have until 17 April to take the plunge. What’s more, a special opening of the Bierger Center is planned for Saturday 18 March, from 9am to 4pm, exclusively for voter registration.

The municipal authorities have specified that the letter will be written in at least French, German and English and that it will include the logo of the City of Luxembourg as well as a QR code allowing access to the information portal Jepeuxvoter.lu.

As a reminder, registration on the electoral roll for the municipal elections of 11 June is possible for people over 18 years of age residing in the grand duchy by registering at the municipal administration or on the portal myguichet.lu.
