According to Eurostat, 47% of Europe's electricity production came from renewable energies. In Luxembourg, the share is slightly higher, exceeding 50%.

Eurostat has released new data on electricity production in Europe. In 2024, 47.4% of the EU’s net electricity was generated from renewable sources, marking a 2.6 percentage point increase compared to 2023.

Denmark led the EU in renewable energy share, with 88.8% of its net electricity production coming from renewables, followed by Portugal at 87.4%. On the other end of the spectrum, the lowest shares were recorded in Malta (15.1%) and the Czech Republic (17.5%). Luxembourg surpassed the EU average, with renewables accounting for more than 50% of its electricity production.

In the EU, wind power (39.1%) and hydroelectricity (29.9%) accounted for more than two-thirds of electricity generated from renewable sources. The remaining share came from solar energy (22.4%), renewable fuels (8.1%), and geothermal energy (0.5%).

In Luxembourg, however, the energy mix differs slightly. Hydropower dominates renewable electricity generation, followed by wind power, combustible fuels, and solar energy.

However, it is important to note that Luxembourg imports the vast majority of its electricity from neighboring countries such as Belgium and Germany. As a result, the country's electricity production does not reflect actual consumption.

According to Energieauer, national production will cover only 26% of Luxembourg’s electricity consumption in 2024. Furthermore, 88% of the electricity fed back into the grid from domestic production came from renewable sources, while only 23% of imported electricity in 2024 was covered by renewable energy production.
