Luxembourg lawyer Gaston Vogel died on Saturday 2 November 2024 at the Centre hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL), aged 87. Born in Walferdange, he devoted more than six decades to defending various causes, distinguishing himself by his outspokenness and unshakeable determination.
Gaston Vogel defended one of the accused police officers in the “Bommeleeër” trial. In 2014, the court acquitted the two former gendarmes of charges relating to the attacks of the 1980s. The acquittal confirmed his ability to handle complex court cases successfully.
Vogel, known for his incisive pleadings, was also a fervent lover of the written word. He published more than twenty books, covering a wide range of subjects including law and philosophy. Outside the courtroom, he took part in many public debates, openly criticising institutions such as the Church and the monarchy, reflecting his commitment to causes he considered just.
