The unemployment rate in the grand duchy remained unchanged at 5.9% in March 2025, according to seasonally adjusted figures by national statistics bureau Statec. Whilst the overall rate held steady, new data from the national employment agency Adem pointed to a growing number of long-term and highly qualified jobseekers behind a year-on-year rise in unemployment.
As of 31 March 2025, 18,903 resident jobseekers were registered with Adem and available for work--1,249 more than in March 2024, marking a 7.1% annual increase. The growth was most pronounced among individuals who had been registered for at least 12 months, as well as those holding higher education qualifications.
By sector, the sharpest increases in unemployment were seen in accounting, IT, culinary production and road transport driving.
New jobseeker registrations remained relatively stable. A total of 2,718 residents signed on with Adem in March, just 13 fewer than the same month last year--a marginal decline of 0.5%.
Meanwhile, the number of resident jobseekers receiving full unemployment benefits rose by 275, or 2.7%, over the year to reach 10,348. Employment support measures covered 4,479 individuals, a figure broadly in line with March 2024 levels.
Employers reported 3,354 new vacancies to Adem in March, reflecting a 7.1% rise compared to the same month last year.
However, the overall number of open positions on the labour market fell to 6,821, down 10.2% year-on-year. The drop in vacancies was most notable in accounting, banking and warehousing roles.
