The country met, and even exceeded, its goal of reducing natural gas consumption during the month of October. But efforts to conserve energy are still called for.

On 8 November, Luxembourg’s minister of energy (déi Gréng) announced that the grand duchy had met its goal of reducing natural gas consumption by 15%. In fact, compared to the reference period of 2017 to 2022, consumption decreased by approximately 36%.

“The October figures once again indicate a real desire in Luxembourg to participate in the collective effort to save gas,” said Turmes. But despite this reduction, the energy minster added a word of caution. “If temperatures drop after this relatively warm month of October, gas consumption for heating could increase considerably. I therefore continue to call for efforts to save energy!”

To increase the security of the EU’s energy supply, between 1 August 2022 and 31 March 2023, member states have voluntarily agreed to reduce their gas demand by 15% compared to average consumption over the last five years.
