Men tend to be healthier for longer than women in Luxembourg, reversing the EU trend according to a Eurostat study.

The published on 13 June showed that in the European Union, the number of healthy life years at birth was longer for women than men. Women on average live 64.5 years of healthy life years (HLY)--or disability-free life expectancy--compared to EU men who experience lives free from activity limitations for 63.5 years.

In Luxembourg this trend is reversed though: men have one of the higher HLY in the EU with 64 years at birth, placing them 8th in the rankings. Luxembourg women, however, place lower--on the 16th position--with 62.4 years. For reference, Swedish men (72.8) and women (72.7) placed first on the study, and Latvian men (52.6) and women (54.3) placed last.

Despite this, women tend to have a higher life expectancy, reaching an average of 84.7 years in Luxembourg, compared to men who tend to live to 80.3 years. According to Eurostat, “healthy life years [in the EU] represent 78% and 82% of the total life expectancy for women and men, respectively,” meaning that men tend to live shorter lives that are free from limitations for longer.
