The grand duchy wants to “combine economy and ecology” at the 2025 World Expo in Osaka, with the design for a zero carbon pavilion to be selected in early June.

Minister of the economy Franz Fayot (LSAP) on Wednesday said that participating at the Osaka World Expo is an important “showcase for a country, a way of presenting itself internationally, with its values, its priorities, its economy.” For Luxembourg, it is an opportunity to position the country as innovative and “to highlight our ambition to combine economy and ecology, notably through an exemplary implementation of the principles of the circular economy.”

The minister said that the Luxembourg pavilion--the winning design of which will be selected in early June--will reflect the country’s commitment to sustainable and innovative development, in line with the UN’s sustainable development goals.

That means the pavilion should be easily removable, transportable and, if necessary, modular. In addition, consideration should be given to the durability and potential reuse of construction materials and technical equipment. Fayot explained that the pavilion could be used in another location after the expo or that it will be dismantled and its materials used for other projects.

The Osaka expo has as its central theme “designing the society of the future, imagining our life of tomorrow”.

The jury that will select the winning design is composed of representatives from the ministries involved in the expo, as well as the Chamber of Commerce, the Order of Architects and Consulting Engineers and the public buildings administration.
