Luxembourg’s unemployment rate dropped to 5.8% in January 2025, said the country’s employment agency Adem. The number of jobseekers rose by 6.1% compared to January 2024.

As of 31 January 2025, there were 19,431 registered jobseekers with Adem, said a from the national employment agency issued on 20 February. That’s an increase of 1,114 people (or 6.1%) compared to January 2024. “This increase particularly concerns job seekers registered for seven months or more, job seekers aged over 30, as well as the most qualified job seekers (higher education graduates),” said Adem.

In terms of professions, the most significant increases were seen in the sectors of IT, road transport driving, culinary production, banking and accounting.

Unemployment rate decreases slightly

Corrected for seasonal variations and calculated by Luxembourg’s statistics bureau Statec, the unemployment rate decreased a bit in January 2025, reaching 5.8%. In December 2024, the figure stood at 5.9%.

The number of resident job seekers receiving full unemployment benefits rose by 916 people, or 8.4%, over one year, said Adem. That brings the figure to 11,837 as of 31 January 2025 (versus 10,921 in January 2024). The number of beneficiaries of employment measures was 4,332, more or less stable when compared to January 2024 (when this figure stood at 4,360).

3,426 job vacancies declared to Adem

During the month of January 2025, employers declared 3,426 vacancies to Adem, an increase when compared to December 2024 (when 2,385 job vacancies were declared), said the employment agency. The total number of positions available stands at 6,545 as of 31 January 2025. That’s a decline of 6% over one year and mainly affects the accounting, IT, banking and retail stocking professions.

The total number of vacancies could be higher, since some companies do not always list all open positions with the jobs agency.
