Nominated on 11 January, Marc Angel has been elected vice-president of the European Parliament on 18 January. He received 307 votes--an absolute majority--during the second round of a secret vote in the parliament’s plenary session. Angel replaces Eva Kaili, a Greek MEP who has been arrested as part of a corruption and money laundering scandal related to Qatar.
Angel, who is a member of Luxembourg’s LSAP, received the support of the European People’s Party (EPP Group), the largest political group in the European Parliament, on 17 January. Other candidates in the running included Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield from France and Annalisa Tardino from Italy.
The European Parliament has 14 vice-presidents in total, to whom the president of the Parliament delegates duties.
