For the third week in a row, the weekly report from the Ministry of Health shows an increase in the number of new cases of covid-19 in Luxembourg, but 73.3% of those tested positive for Sars-CoV-2 were not vaccinated.

Since the end of August, the number of new positive cases in Luxembourg has been on the rise again. However, the increase was slightly lower in the week from 30 August to 5 September, according to the latest weekly report from the Ministry of Health. It was up 6%, compared to +23% the previous week. The number of new cases rose from 542 to 573.

The number of PCR tests performed also increased, from 27,349 to 29,057. As of 5 September, the number of active infections has increased to 1,052 compared to 913 on 29 August.

Of the 573 new infections, 420 people were unvaccinated (73.3%) and 153 people had a complete vaccination schedule (26.7%). Their average age remains stable at 31.7 years.

The effective reproduction rate (indicator of the number of people infected by a carrier of the virus) decreased from 1.11 to 1.04. The positivity rate for all tests performed remained stable at 1.97%. The same applies to the positivity rate for tests carried out on prescription, i.e. for people with symptoms, at 6.19%. The incidence rate is increasing, with 90 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over seven days, five more than the previous week.

Foreign travel remains the most frequent source of infection (31.8%), followed by the family circle (25.2%) and leisure activities (6.3%).

Two new deaths

Two new deaths were reported during the week. This does not include one new death during the current week, which will be included in the next weekly report.

In hospital, there were 22 new admissions of covid-19 patients in normal care, compared to 21 the previous week. In intensive care, the number of occupied beds increased from six to nine. The average age of the patients increased from 46 to 60 years. Three quarters (76.6%) of the patients in normal care and all patients in intensive care (100%) were not vaccinated.

7,401 vaccine doses were administered between 30 August and 5 September. 3,584 first doses, 3,757 second doses and 60 third doses. This brings the total number of vaccines administered as of 8 September to 769,652, and the number of people with a complete vaccination schedule to 395,384.
