At around 9am on Tuesday morning a man was seen ablaze walking near the Royal Hamilus centre.

Police have confirmed that a middle-aged man had been rescued by a bystander.

According to staff from L'Atelier Steffen, the man engulfed in flames walked pass their shop. Another eye-witness said the man’s clothes were on fire, and that he fell to the floor in the bus lane.  The witness said a bus driver helped extinguish the flames. The victim is thought to have been in his 40s or 50s

Police were first to the scene, 10 minutes after it was first reported, and an ambulance arrived 5 minutes later, the employee from the L'Atelier Steffen told Delano.

Reports suggest the incident was the result of an act of self-immolation, but so far any motive remains unclear.

This isn’t the first incident of self-immolation in the grand duchy, in 2004, Maggy Mufu Mpia, a Belgian-Congolese mother of three doused herself with gasoline in the heart of the capital before striking a match.

Transported to Metz for treatment, she died a few days later. It was reported at the time that she wanted to denounce the administrative harassment her family was subjected to and the racism her children endured.

In 2012, a French man living in Mamer attempted to take his own life in front of his girlfriend by also setting himself alight after pouring gasoline over himself.

Neighbours rushed to help the burning man, putting out the flames with blankets. Luxembourg Air Rescue then flew the man to a special burns hospital in Liege. His condition was described as being critical but stable.
