Leveraging generative artificial intelligence to enhance legal services, law firm Maples and Calder, in partnership with Harvey AI, has announced the rollout of the technology to its global network of partners and senior professionals.

Maples and Calder, the law firm unit of the Maples Group, has extended its collaboration with Harvey AI, the OpenAI-supported legal AI platform, aiming to enhance its legal and professional services. on Monday 11 March, this development is part of what the firm said was its continuous efforts to innovate within the legal and regulatory sectors by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) to support its clients.

The firm undertook a pilot project with generative AI (GenAI), involving a select group of senior lawyers and professionals, according to Maples and Calder. This initial phase aimed to evaluate the technology’s potential to enhance outcomes for clients and the work experience for staff. Following this pilot, which commenced in late 2022, Maples and Calder has decided to implement Harvey AI across its network, introducing the technology to over 140 global partners and a selection of senior professionals.

Maples Group operates in the grand duchy through Maples and Calder (Luxembourg), providing legal advice on Luxembourg law related to corporate, finance, funds, investment management and tax. Since opening its Luxembourg office in 2018, the firm has grown to eight partners and 136 staff members as of January 2024. Through MaplesFS (Luxembourg), Maples Group also offers fund, fiduciary, entity formation and management services to European clients.

Harvey’s GenAI platform is the result of a collaborative effort between leading AI engineers and legal professionals, aimed at creating specialised models that support secure AI workflows and legal research. Harvey AI is designed to assist the firm’s lawyers and professionals in their daily tasks, facilitating an innovative approach to the delivery of legal services, stated the press release.

Jonathan Green, the global managing partner of Maples and Calder, believes GenAI will revolutionise how legal services are delivered but “it will never replace our lawyers.” Instead, Green argued in the firm’s press release that the most impactful work ahead will blend the best of human and technological strengths. He emphasised that the legal expertise, business insight and client trust in their team will become even more vital.

Winston Weinberg, co-founder of Harvey, mentioned the partnership with the Maples Group, focusing on the mutual goal of advancing legal services through GenAI. Weinberg noted that the collaboration has been crucial in evaluating and enhancing Harvey AI, aiming to create new possibilities for clients and lawyers.
