Masks might soon become optional on public transports in Luxembourg. Photo: Shutterstock

Public transport users will soon no longer have to wear masks, health minister Paulette Lenert (LSAP) said on 18 May during a press conference. 

Lenert (LSAP) revealed that the government would submit a draft law for the mask mandate on public transport to be dropped while speaking during a press conference with social security minister Claude Haagen (LSAP) about the decentralisation of healthcare. 

Under current laws, masks are obligatory on public transport and in hospitals, care homes and prison facilities. These restrictions were due to be in place until 30 June but this deadline could now be cut short. 

Luxembourg in March , including the CovidCheck regime, which only remains in place for staff, suppliers and visitors to hospitals and care homes as well as prison.

People testing positive still have to isolate until they self-test negative two days in a row. Lenert hinted towards a further relaxation of measures but stated that this would happen in its own time. 

asking for masks to become optional on public transports had been submitted in March, but had failed to receive sufficient signatures to be debated in parliament. Lawmakers will still have to approve the government’s decision to lift the mask mandate on public transport.
