Max Hahn is taking over the ministry for family affairs and integration, and the ministry for the greater region from Corinne Cahen, who is stepping down to become the future alderman of the city of Luxembourg.

Current member of parliament, (DP) will become minister for family affairs and integration, and minister for the greater region until the next legislative elections.  (DP), who has held these two ministries since the beginning of the Bettel era, is now focusing on Luxembourg City, where she received 11,328 votes in Sunday’s local elections, making her the most successful candidate behind her DP colleagues (15,212 votes), (12,410 votes) and CSV member (11,699 votes).

The official announcement was made on the evening of 14 June following a meeting of the political bureau of the Democratic Party, which is responsible for proposing a successor to the outgoing minister. The solution of dividing Cahen’s ministerial responsibilities between the current DP ministers--, , , and --was considered, but rejected.

, MP and general secretary of the party who won the town of Echternach and is probably preparing to become its mayor, had also been considered for the position.

Knowledge of the issues

The advantage of Hahn over other potential candidates within the DP group in the Chamber of Deputies is that, as chairman of the family and integration commission, he has a good knowledge of Cahen’s files. He is also vice-chairman of the housing, environment and mobility committee.

Born on 30 April 1984, this engineer by training entered politics at a very early age. He joined the Dippach local council in 2008 and became its first alderman in 2011. He was elected president of the Liberal Democratic Youth (JDL) in 2010 and became a member of parliament in December 2013. This Sunday, during the local elections, the rapporteur for the 2023 budget in the parliament received 1,174 votes in his favour, 74 more than six years ago. This result should enable him to retain his mandate as first alderman.

In the last legislative elections, he received 11,228 votes in the South constituency. This was the party’s third best score behind (18,383 votes) and (15,527 votes).
