Luxembourg’s weather portal Meteolux for 18 July raised an amber alert as temperatures in the grand duchy are set to reach 34ºC, increasing it to a red alert for 19 July.

With a heat peak of 33-35ºC expected during the day, and temperatures only decreasing to 31ºC in the evening, of a potential danger to their health. Temperatures are particularly high in the south of the country.

The heat as well as the lack of rain are also causing O₃ levels to reach dangerous levels in the country. Meteolux expects the quantity of ozone particles in the air to exceed the European threshold of 180µg/m³.

For 19 July, the weather forecaster has raised the alarm in the entire country, both for the heat and O₃ levels. In bigger cities in the south of the country, temperatures could reach a record 39ºC.

High temperatures can be a danger to the population, especially vulnerable people like the elderly. High ozone levels can--mainly for vulnerable people--cause respiratory issues, headaches, irritation of eyes and throat, as well as infections in the respiratory system. Meteolux recommends avoiding intensive physical activity outside of the home. Indoors, the website says, O₃ levels are generally halved.

On Wednesday 20 July, temperatures should fall slightly, with a thunderstorm expected in the afternoon.

Extreme temperatures--as have been witnessed on the European continent the past few days--combined with the lack of rain has an impact on drinking water supplies too. The government on 14 July reminded that of their water consumption.

Meteolux also recommends not taking the car during O₃ and heat peaks.
