The Lycée Mathias Adam in Lamadeleine and Differdange from next school year will offer the International Baccalaureate in French complementing an English-language offer in Luxembourg City.

The school from September will start offering the course from the 4e school year. The Luxembourg school system counts down the years in secondary school, from seven to one. The IB programme normally has five preparatory years, from the 7e to 3e, with two years for the baccalaureate, the 2e and 1re.

In September 2023, the Lycée Mathias Adam will offer the 7e and 3e as French-speaking IB classes, adding the 6e and 2e the following year and with the full cycle becoming available from the 2025-2026 school year.

Under the programme, all subjects are taught in French, except for English, Luxembourgish or other foreign languages.

The programme aims at pupils with a good command of French and who want to pursue their education in this language.

The Athénée in Luxembourg City offers the International Baccalaureate in English. Both the Athénée and the Lycée Mathias Adam are public state-funded schools and non-fee paying.

The French programme adds to a growing list of alternative education options for families in Luxembourg whose children might struggle in the multilingual environment of the public school system, which uses Luxembourgish, German and French to varying degrees throughout primary and secondary education.

A in Luxembourg City is set to open with the start of the next school year, offering language sections in French, English and German for pupils.

The Lycée Technique du Centre also offers a French-speaking International Baccalaureate but the curriculum at Lycée Mathias Adam will strengthen the offer in the south of the country on the border to France.
