EU and non-EU residents in the grand duchy can now submit several immigration requests online.
These procedures are designed for European Union citizens, third-country nationals who are family members of an EU citizen, and third-country nationals with a residence permit.
The immigration directorate on Monday 10 July that the online submission process can be completed with or without electronic authentication using the online ID system LuxTrust, an electronic identity card (eID) or GouvID.
However, it is important to note that while the procedures can be initiated online, the responses to electronically submitted requests will still be provided by postal mail.
It is also worth noting that these online procedures specifically cater to EU citizens and third-country nationals who are already residing in Luxembourg.
Individuals residing abroad and those seeking international protection are advised that these procedures require the processing of original documents and cannot be submitted electronically.
The development of these online procedures has been a collaborative effort between the immigration directorate and the Government IT Centre (CTIE)--the administrative body responsible for IT services for Luxembourg’s government, ministries and public administrations.
Details on online procedures
For EU citizens, the available electronic procedures include applying for a permanent residence certificate after a regular stay of at least five years and requesting a replacement for a lost or damaged residence certificate or permanent residence certificate.
For third-country nationals who are family members of an EU citizen, the online procedures encompass renewing a residence card or permanent residence card as their validity approaches expiration, obtaining a permanent residence card after a regular stay of at least five years with the EU citizen and replacing a lost or damaged residence card or permanent residence card.
Third-country nationals can utilise the online procedures to apply for a residence permit as temporary residence permit holders, renew their residence permit when it nears expiration, obtain a long-term resident permit after a regular stay of at least five years, and replace a lost or damaged residence permit.
The directorate also mentions that while these online procedures offer convenience, the option to submit requests using traditional paper forms remains available.
