The finance and education ministries and the European Investment Bank inaugurated on 26 September a new school welcoming 80 children whose parents are Ukrainian refugees or applicants and beneficiaries of international protection.

The EIB used the space as an in-house nursery until 2020, but following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, “the EIB has decided to support the most vulnerable refugees, children, by facilitating their reception and schooling in Luxembourg.”

Situated in Kirchberg, the building has now been taken over by the ministry of education.  The students who have been split into eight classrooms will be able to complete their elementary schooling.

“Investment in new classrooms is certainly an investment in the integration of these young people and in their future prospects,” education minister Claude Meisch (DP) said.

“I am very grateful to the EIB for making this building available for the benefit of refugee children from Ukraine and other countries,” finance minister Yuriko Backes stated. “This initiative is a strong expression of solidarity and another example of the excellent cooperation between Luxembourg and the EIB.”

EIB president Werner Hoyer was also present at the inauguration.
