The Grand Duchy’s capital is among the top fifth of nicest cities to live in the world, an international research firm has concluded. Luxembourg City was ranked 24th out of 140 localities surveyed in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2015 Global Liveability Ranking.
The capital placed 11th out of 22 European cities in the firm’s annual quality of life list, which was published on Tuesday.
The EIU report stated that cities which: “score best tend to be mid-sized cities in wealthier countries with a relatively low population density. These can foster a range of recreational activities without leading to high crime levels or overburdened infrastructure. Seven of the top ten scoring cities are in Australia and Canada”.
Melbourne, Vienna and Vancouver were the top three “most liveable” while Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, Dhaka in Bangladesh and Damascus were the three “least liveable”.
Over the past five years liveability increased in Honolulu, Warsaw and Beijing, The Economist noted, while liveability decreased in Detroit, Athens and Moscow.
CORRECTION: A previous version of this article said that Luxembourg City placed 25th in the EIU survey. That was last year’s ranking.
