Internationally minded groups in the Grand Duchy have raised €600,000 for 89 charitable organisations around the world--€10,000 more than the previous go.

The funds came from the 54th annual Bazar International held last November. More the 28,000 people attended the event, organisers said in an announcement on Thursday.

In addition to being a fundraiser, the bazar is a highlight on the international community’s pre-holiday season social calendar. Some 70 stands, most representing a nationality or region, sell crafts or culinary items from their culture, or goods like books.

The largest donation--€25,000--will go towards the “Petites Servantes des Pauvres” programme, run by the L’Institut des Soeurs OCPSP, which provides housing, medical care and support for those affected by malnutrition in Benin.

€22,000 was granted to the “Un nouveau Sourire pour notre École” project, to renovate a nursery and primary school in Lima, and the “La Maison des Enfants d’Awa” project to install solar panels in Senegal.

Four organisations working here in Luxembourg received a total of €22,000: Make-A-Wish Luxembourg, ALAN, ASTI and ALUPS-Bébé.

The bulk of the remaining funds will go to groups working in the developing world.

The 2015 Bazar will be held Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November at LuxExpo in Kirchberg.
