 Boson Energy

Founded last year, Boson Energy specializes in building biomass energy plants that provide electricity and heat to existing industrial sites. The company’s founders and intellectual property come from Sweden. After meetings with the economy minister and promotion agency Luxinnovation, the entrepreneurs chose the Grand Duchy over their home country and Poland as headquarters for their new firm. Delano spoke with co-founder and chair Jan Grimbrandt about those meetings, and what his company got out of the experience.

AG: Was it difficult to connect with them?

JG: [Snaps his fingers.]

AG: How did it go?

JG: We had a first meeting in December of last year at the ministry. And it ticked. They’re really professional. It surprised me, because I have experienced working with other governmental representatives in different countries. This was a complete surprise for me, the biggest surprise here. They are extremely talented and interested, both at the ministry of economy and Luxinnovation.

AG: Did they understand what you wanted to do?

JG: Right away. They really got it right away.

AG: What kind of support did they provide?

JG: So far they’ve arranged meetings [with prospective customers] for us, and gave us ideas on potential partners. To their credit, we now have a complete supply chain of subcontractors and partners.

The core technology we’re holding inside. The engineering is based in Sweden. Due to historical reasons, there are a lot of competent people there in the energy sector. But when it comes to supply chain, it’s very important that you have qualified partners [locally]. And now we have them.

That was the second surprise about Luxembourg, the qualified companies we found here. They are definitely not stupid, they’re really good.

More on Luxembourg’s eco-tech sector can be found in the October print edition of Delano.
