Players from Malta, Germany and the Netherlands fared well during the international junior squash tournament held in the Grand Duchy over the weekend. The KPMG & AMS Luxembourg Junior Open, part of the European Squash Federation’s Junior Circuit, saw 76 participants from 11 countries play at the Top Squash Club in Sandweiler.

The first match got under way Friday, with the finals concluding Sunday afternoon. In the girls’ under 13 category, the Dutch contingent dominated, taking the top three places, organisers told Delano following the finals. Gabi Fritsche improved on her second place last year to take the title 3-0 against her compatriot Fleur Maas.

In a strong boys’ under 13 draw, the two best hopes from Luxembourg, Tumi Tomasson and Miguel Duarte were eliminated in the quarter finals. In the final, the young Irish player, Scott Gillanders beat Peter Devald 3-1 in a tough contest.

Luxembourg was represented in the girls’ under 15 group by Stella Nightingale and Anvita Ramachandran, who was later awarded the LAB fair play trophy. Despite having played well, both she and Nightingale were eliminated from their pool. The group was won by Juliette Permentier of the Netherlands.

The boys’ under 15 was won by the winner of last year’s under 13 category, Sanjay Jeeva, who ran out a convincing winner 3-1 against Germany’s Valentin Kartaly.

The boys’ under 17 group featured an impressive performance from Noam Peer of Israel, ranked number 10 in Europe, who conceded very few points in the final against Nikita Givelsky of Ireland.

In the main competitions, the under 19s, Malta’s Colette Sultana proved far too strong for the other girls and didn’t concede a set in the whole competition.

In the boys’ under group, an excellent final was finally taken by Hendrik Voessing, who beat Belgium’s Tiago Goriely 3-2 having come back from 2-1 down, in what organisers describe as a “thrilling final”.
