A Luxembourg group is setting up several sporty ways to help those touched by cancer.

Kick Cancer Into Touch was founded by Mea Shepard--who lost her husband to the disease--and former Rugby Club Luxembourg player Joe Lister more than a decade ago. All the funds that it raises benefit Omega 90, a cancer hospice, and Kriibs Krank Kanner, an organisation that supports children and families affected by cancer.

Lister said KCIT is important to him personally because it is “my way of remembering and dealing with the passing away of my sister and my form of taking some social responsibly. It has become part of my life simply.”

KCIT organised a golf tournament late last month at the Kikuoka Club Canach, and now the focus is on its 13th annual touch rugby tournament.

Touch rugby is a six-a-side non-contact form of rugby played on a half sized pitch with diverse teams. “We like the sport as it is really open to all, there is a women’s team, mixed, men’s, vets and kids,” Lister explained.

In fact, “there is a weekly summer league running at the moment by all the stars from the Touch Rugby Club. If interested, turn up to watch or ask for a game. It is a great way to meet people and discover a new sport,” he said.

The fundraising tourney will be held the last weekend of August, with team registration closing one week before the event.

The day also features a barbeque feast and family friendly entertainment, and it is not necessary to take to the field in order to lend support. Lister said KCIT is “always happy for people to join in, make a salad, bake a cake or just offer a hand behind the bar on the day.”

Next up for the autumn? Lister said that a KCIT “team entered in the strongman race; the more money we raise the most extreme our costumes will be.”
