Luxembourg has utterly failed to charm a British-born comedian that is popular in the US. The comic made a comparison between France and the Grand Duchy during his news satire programme, “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”, which airs on the American pay TV channel HBO.
On Sunday the show aired a clip of France’s president, François Hollande, addressing the French parliament, following the recent Paris attacks. Hollande stated: “Life must resume in full. What would our country be without its cafés, concerts, sporting events and museums?”
John Oliver then said: “Oh, I can tell you what France would be like without all its cultural institutions. It would be Luxembourg. And nobody wants that.”
“Did you know that if you google ‘interesting Luxembourg facts’, the result is just a page that says, ‘no’,” Oliver added.
HBO said “Last Week Tonight” had an average audience of 4m last year. Before hosting the show, Oliver was a correspondent for the Daily Show. His take on the Grand Duchy can be seen on YouTube.
