Playing in front of his home crowd at Glasgow’s Braehead Arena, Andy Murray produced his best form to defeat Luxembourg no.1 Gilley Muller 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 in what proved to be the deciding match on Sunday afternoon. The win gave the GB team an unassailable 3-1 lead in the tie.

Muller had started so well for the Kurt Salmon Luxembourg David Cup team, winning the opening match of the tie against British number two James Ward 6-3, 7-6, 6-1. But Andy Murray then white-washed Laurent Bram 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 in the second singles match to level the scores. On Saturday Murray teamed up with brother Jamie to defeat Bram and youngster Mike Vermeer in the doubles match, winning 7-5, 6-2, 6-0.

British commentators were surprised that ream captain Jacques Radoux did not include Muller in the doubles match. But Radoux said that he did not want the Luxembourg ace to play three days in a row, especially as he had to face Murray in a match that could have put real pressure on Ward in the final singles match, had the Luxembourger produced a surprise result.

But that was not to be. Having seen how well the Luxembourger played against Rafa Nadal in the first two sets of their recent match at Wimbledon, Murray did not take Muller for granted and the Scot played some relentless tennis to win the match and decide the tie. As it was, James ward beat Mike Vermeer ion the final singles to make it 4-1 to Great Britain who now face Hungary in a promotion play off.
