Architects Paczowski & Fritsche and Schroder & Associés, CFL, and the ministry of sustainable development and infrastructure

To kick-off Luxembourg’s mobility week, national railway CFL and the ministry of sustainable development and infrastructure announced the construction of the new train station north of the city centre. It will be located below the “Red Bridge” (officially the Grande-Duchesse Charlotte Bridge) and connect via cable car to the new tramway station being built on John F. Kennedy Boulevard near the European Investment Bank.

The train station will be served by existing lines to the north, including Ettelbruck and Diekirch, and by extending service from Wasserbillig and Trier in the east, Arlon and Kleinbettingen in the west, and Esch-sur-Alzette, Longwy, Metz and Thionville in the south. This will eliminate the need for many commuters to disembark trains at the central train station and transfer to busses, trains or the future tramway system. CFL estimates a passenger going between the central station and Luxexpo will save more than six minutes each way.

The estimated €93.25 million project is part of the government’s programme to have a quarter of all voyages in Luxembourg take place on public transport by 2020. Construction is expected to be completed in 2017.
