Dear Job Doctor,

Which online job sites do you recommend, and why?

There are three main job sites in Luxembourg that cover all types of positions Jobs.lu, Monster.lu and Moovijob.com.

Based on the volume and types of roles along with the traffic through these jobsites, all three can be classified as relevant and important. However, I should note that the following short summary has been carried out in the general terms, not specific to sector and to level of experience. You need to therefore ensure your own job search on such sites is tailored specifically for you.

Monster.lu has a complex environment for the user and also offers much more information related to careers than just searching for a job. Its strength is its international search function; it has one of the most international reaches of any global jobsite. It also has the highest volume of traffic, making it attractive to advertise.

Strength: international. Weakness: too much information.

The most user friendly site is Jobs.lu. It has a simple design and has the easiest to use search functionality in three languages.  Although it has an international search function, its strength is its Luxembourg locality. The volume of traffic is behind Monster but is steadily increasing.

Strength: usability. Weakness: local.

Moovijob.com probably has the clearest category criteria classification available; the other two have some duplication. Although not necessarily correct, it can be considered mainly for the Francophone market. It’s the challenger to Monster.lu and Jobs.lu.

Strength: usability. Weakness: chasing the traffic.

All of these sites have the facility to upload your CV so every jobseeker can be found by a company and recruitment firm.

Caution: as many different sources have access to the CV databases and can see if a user uploads a CV or if their account has activity, I recommend that you do not post your CV and personal or confidential information as you have little control over who has access to it; maybe even your own HR department has access and that will highlight that you are seeking an alternative role.

Due to strategy, client discretion, cost and/or allocation restrictions many recruitment firms do not advertise all of their jobs on jobsites. It is therefore worth considering registering for job alerts directly on recruitment firms’ websites.

Follow my advice on selecting the right recruitment firm to partner with in my previous column, “Finding a recruiter”.
